Fasting or not eating food for a long time is well known as a religious diet. But some have also started using it for special health benefits. In recent years, many studies have been published showing that fasting or fasting interruptions can reduce risk factors and reverse the symptoms of serious health, including cancer.

In one study of time-limited feeding of 9-12 hours, fasting was shown to affect obesity and type 2 diabetes in mice. Obesity is a major risk factor for cancer, which can support fasting to treat cancer.

Another study in mice showed that a fast-acting diet reduced the incidence of cancer for two months. The results were similar in a pilot of the same scientists with 19 men; it showed decreased biomarkers and risk factors for cancer.

In a study in 2016, studies showed that a combination of fasting and chemotherapy reduced worsening of breast cancer and skin cancer. The combined therapies resulted in the body producing higher levels of common lymphocytes (CLP) and tumorigenic lymphocytes. CLPs are precursor cells of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that are transported in tumors and are known to kill tumors.

The same study found that short-term hunger makes cancer cells susceptible to chemotherapy while protecting normal cells, and this also contributed to the production of stem cells.
